Computer Aid International, in partnership with Dell, launched the Dell Solar Powered Learning Lab in Cazucá near the outskirts of Bogotá in the Summer of 2016.

The aim of this program is to build local institutional capacity to ignite aspiration-led learning for marginalised youth of Cazuca who came to the area to escape the violence caused by the armed conflict between illegally armed groups and the national army.

The Solar-Powered Learning Lab is part of a multi-country youth learning program, bringing together Dell technology and long-term engagement with Computer Aid’s ICT4D expertise.They provide a unique space for enriched learning and access to some of the best skills training, for traditionally underserved children and young adults. The program brings together expert in-country trainers, who can build local partners’ capacity to deliver 21st-century skills that are valuable to young people in the community.

Mexico SLL

Computer Aid International are proud to announce the opening of their first double Solar-powered learning lab in the San Mateo Atenco county, in the state of Mexico. Partnering with Dell GivingRobotiX Fundacion and Squire and Partners, this project was designed to provide quality education to the underserved youth population in the area.

The solar lab was created from shipping containers with designs from the UK architecture firm Squire and Partners, with 11 Dell thin client computers and 10 rugged laptops donated by Dell Giving with an outstanding volunteer engagement and support form Dell Mexico. The educational model of RobotiX goes beyond teaching technical skills, and will allow children and young people to learn, identify and solve real-life problems while having fun.

South Africa SLL

The Solar Learning Lab installed at Diepsloot School South Africa is creating a unique space for learning, and the opportunity for students to gain 21st-century skills.

The lab is managed by local partner Code for Change South Africa, who work to bridge the skills-gap in the ICT job market in South Africa. They train students in skills ranging from PC Basics to intermediate coding and also host IT Technician workshops. Their intensive hands-on training programmes empower and develop young people to be competent in ICT, and enable them to use their skills to find rewarding employment and enhance the quality of their lives. Code for Change will deliver the Dell Youth Learning programme and leverage the technology of the Solar Learning Lab in the most inclusive and effective way for Diepsloot’s student population.

The Solar Learning Lab marks the first ever installation of computers at Diepsloot School, being of great benefit to over 700 students, aged 14-19.
